Gezeichnet von Charles Lyall, 1894.Der im ersten Band vorgestellten Armee Englands folgen nun die ausländischen Truppenteile, die mit dem Herzog von Wellington am Feldzug in den Niederlanden teilnahmen. Neben den hannoverschen Truppenteilen, entweder als King’s German Legion (KGL) oder als Neuformation, die ab 1813 im Königreich Hannover errichtet wurden, sind dies vor allem die Truppen des Königreichs der Niederlande. Dieses bestand nicht nur aus originär holländischen, sondern auch aus belgischen Einheiten, dazu noch ein kleines Nassauisches Kontingent. Den kleinsten Truppenkörper stellte das Kontingent des Herzogs von Braunschweig.

Diese alliierten Truppen stellten in der Armee Wellingtons den größten Teil, denn nur etwa 36% der Truppen in den Niederlanden kamen aus Großbritannien. Zählt man die eigentlich in englischem Sold stehende King’s German Legion mit ihren 10% hinzu, bleiben jedoch noch über 50% der Armee Wellingtons, die nicht in britischem Sold stehen. Aus dem faktenreichen Band von Adkins über die Schlacht von Waterloo geht hervor, dass etwa 45% der 1815 unter Wellington vereinten Truppenteile deutsch sprachen.

Wie schon im ersten Band werden die Tafeln des Künstlers Charles Lyall möglichst einer Einheit zugeordnet und gemäß aktuellem, uniformkundlichen Kenntnisstand kommentiert. Wenn eine Vorlage des Künstlers erkennbar ist, wird diese ebenfalls in der Tafelkommentierung erwähnt.

Damit dem Leser ein genereller Eindruck der Struktur wie auch des Aussehens der Alliierten Truppenteile Wellingtons gegeben werden kann, ist dem Tafelteil ein umfangreicher Abschnitt mit Beschreibung von Formation und Uniformierung vorangestellt.

Die im ersten Band begonnene Kurzbeschreibung der Schlacht von Waterloo wird in diesem Band nicht aufgenommen. Stattdessen wird die Schlacht bei Quatre Bras vom 16. Juni 1815 beschrieben, bei der die Truppen der Niederlande und Braunschweigs einen erheblichen Anteil daran hatten, den Vorstoß Marschall Neys auf Brüssel aufzuhalten. Begleitet wird diese Beschreibung durch die Karten aus dem Atlas von Siborne.

In der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts wurde das Heilige Römische Reich deutscher Nation durch eine Reihe von Konflikten erschüttert, die bereits die konfessionellen Auseinandersetzungen des Dreißigjährigen Krieges vorweg nahmen. 1546/47 erhob sich der Schmalkaldische Bund gegen Kaiser Karl V. Nach einigen ergebnislosen Feldzügen wurden die Truppen des Bundes 1547 im sächsischen Mühlberg entscheidend geschlagen. Als wenig später der wichtigste Verbündete des Kaisers, Moritz von Sachsen, auf die Seite der widerspenstigen protestantischen Fürsten wechselte, kam es 1552 zu einer neuen Erhebung gegen den Kaiser, die schließlich erst durch den Augsburger Religionsfrieden beigelegt werden konnte. Der Schmalkaldische Krieg und der deutsche Fürstenaufstand gehören zu den letzten großen militärischen Auseinandersetzungen der Landsknechtsära. Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet nicht nur den Verlauf dieser Kriege, sondern schildert die Zusammensetzung, Ausrüstung, Finanzierung und den taktischen Einsatz der großen Söldnerheere.

Band Nummer 31 von „Heere & Waffen“ wirft ein Schlaglicht auf das 16. Jahrhundert. Der Titel „Die Heere des Schmalkaldischen Krieges“ verrät schon, worum es geht, nämlich um die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Kaiser Karl V. und dem Schmalkaldischen Bund, den der Souverän in der Schlacht bei Mühlberg im Jahr 1547 entscheidend schlug. So weit so bekannt. Es gehört aber zum Verdienst des Autorenduos, hier eine treffliche Überblicksdarstellung zum ganzen Konflikt zu liefern. Nicht nur der Verlauf des Krieges wird beleuchtet – wie man es in anderen Medien auch lesen kann – sondern ebenso werden Zusammensetzung, Ausrüstung und die Finanzierung der Heere erläutert, neben deren taktischem Einsatz natürlich. Wer die Sammlung hat, kann nicht darauf verzichten, oder aber, wer sich hier erstmalig mit der Reihe beschäftigt, kann Sammler werden.

The „Burgundian Wars“ are generally considered the campaigns of Charles the Bold, the last Duke of Burgundy, against the Swiss, but they were actually far more extensive. This book presents the European politics leading to the conflicts, then the Duke’s campaigns against Liège starting in 1467, his siege of Neuss on the Rhine, the fighting in the Sundgau and Lorraine. It moves on to the battles against the Swiss staring in 1474, and finally addresses the conflict with the Duke of Lorraine in 1477.
Charles the Bold created an impressive army but lost many battles. His defeat and death at the Battle of Nancy in early 1477 and the resulting conflicts over the succession are of tremendous historical significance because they mark the beginning of the German-French relationship as „hereditary enemies“.

The book recognizes the often-overlooked role of the allies of the Swiss and it also addresses the significance of the French and English kings fueling in this conflict, as well as the role of the Holy Roman Emperor. The authors present the driving forces behind the war against Charles the Bold and which factors led to his downfall. At the same time, they present some heretofore little-known details about the Burgundian Duke’s military innovations and his death.
This book describes the battles and sieges in detail and comprehensively portrays the organization, troop strengths, equipment, artillery, tactics, etc. of Burgundy’s and its opponents’ armies.
The work is illustrated with numerous color contemporary prints, photos of international reenactment groups, maps, etc. It is based on extensive research into rare sources and also contains an extensive bibliography.

Launch of a series of uniforms on the armies at Waterloo 1815, drawn by Charles James Lyall, one of the classic English uniform artists at the beginning of the 20th century. Lyall compiled numerous series of British, Indian and various European armies and epochs. His works can be found in the large collections of uniforms such as the Anne S. K. Brown Collection, USA.
In this work, created in 1894, the appearance of the British Army with all the arms and important regiments who participated in this famous Battle of Waterloo in 1815 are displayed on 75 panels. Each unit is treated on one or more panels and with the various degrees of service. The staff and the special groups are also not missing.

The panels are annotated by the two editors, Markus Gärtner and Markus Stein, according to current research in this field of the uniforms. Translated by Richard L. Sanders.

An introduction on the uniforming of the various units, a detailed and detailed compilation of the literature supplement this volume. There are further volumes to the Dutch-Belgian constellations, to the Royal German Legion and the Brunswick Corps, as well as to the French and Prussian army.

In this book, the authors present a comprehensive work about the organization and individual branches of the Bavarian Army, their uniforms, the regulations for its deployment and the missions of the individual branches in the field, as well as the army’s internal structure. These descriptions are supplemented by accounts of the Bavarians’ combat engagements in the campaigns of 1806-07 against Prussia and Russia, of 1809 against Austria, of 1812 against Russia, as well as of 1813 against Prussia and Russia.

The work was originally published in German as „Die Bayerische Armee 1806-1813“ (552/215) and the authors are true subject matter experts on the Napoleonic Wars, especially the armies of the German states.

No army of the German Confederation of the Rhine underwent such fundamental changes in organization and uniforms as did the Saxon forces of the Napoleonic era. Based on the experiences from the 1806-07 campaigns on Prussia’s side and 1809 allied with the French, the Saxon Army undertook extensive reforms.

This book presents this „new“ Saxon Army with numerous contemporary illustrations, with plates by Patrice Courcelle and Edmund Wagner as well as graphic tables of uniforms of all the regiments by Peter Bunde. Battle Painter 1592-1667

It remains a stroke of fortune that in the turbulent times of the 17th century with its numerous cultural and military upheavals the artistic depiction of human life took a similarly rapid and proliferous development. Never before in history had society in all its squalor and splendor been presented in so many pictures of outstanding artistic quality. At the end of the 16th century the Golden Age of Painting began to evolve especially in the Low Countries. Many contemporary paintings also show events from the Eighty Years War, the United Provinces’ struggle for independence from Spain. However, an entire generation of artists also chose to paint events from the great European conflict which erupted at the same time: the Thirty Years War.

Born in Antwerp, Pieter Snayers was a fairly typical representative of this generation of painters. From a military historian’s point of view, his works are considered particularly authentic. Many of his paintings showing sieges betray meticulous care in the depiction of the cities and fortresses concerned. Snayers’ topographical and analytical approach remains unsurpassed. Even his paintings of major battles (which rarely occurred) defy any form of profound criticism. Snayers’ rendering of the everyday life of the common people involved is straightforward, graphic and occasionally dramatic. We are thus able to gain insight into the events of his time unimpeded by clichés and historic myth.

Pieter Snayers’ works are on display in numerous collections worldwide. With the help of his paintings, many of which are very large in format, this lavishly illustrated book will seek to relate the history of the conflicts depicted. Author Roland Sennewald has compiled a collection of more than 100 of Snayers’ works from all over the world, creating an impressive testimony of his creative talent and relating the story of both the Eighty and Thirty Years Wars, and the times before and after.

(1592- 1667)
Snayers was born in Antwerp where he was baptized on 24 November 1592. His father Lodewijk was the city messenger of Antwerp for Brussels. He was enrolled as a pupil of Sebastiaen Vrancx in Antwerp’s Guild of St. Luke in 1612. Sebastiaen Vrancx was a prominent battle and genre painter. In 1613 Snayers became a master in the Guild.
In 1618 Snayers married Anna Schut, a cousin of the painter Cornelis Schut. Their first child Cornelis was baptized on 8 September 1620. Snayers achieved success as an artist. In Antwerp the family lived in luxury and Snayers participated annually in the lavish banquet of the chamber of rhetoric Violieren.
Snayers joined the painters‘ guild in Brussels on 16 June 1628. He became a citizen of Brussels at the same time. It is believed he had been working for the Archduke Albert (died in 1621) while living in Antwerp. He had been appointed court painter and ‚domesticq van ‚t Hof” (domestic of the court) by the Archduke. Snayers likely moved to Brussels in order to pursue opportunities at the court of the Archduchess Isabella, the widow of the Archduke and the governess of the Southern Netherlands.
After Isabella’s death in 1633, Snayers became court painter to the next two governors, the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria (1634-1641) and the Archduke Leopold (Wilhelm) (1647 to 1656). For them he painted scenes of victorious battles in the tradition of sixteenth-century tapestries. He painted portraits of the aristocracy in Brussels and large landscapes. He also worked for other eminent patrons and the open market. A highlight in his career was a commission for 22 battle paintings by general Ottavio Piccolomini.
While working in Brussels he regularly visited his hometown Antwerp but never returned to live there. He collaborated with painters in Antwerp such as Peter Paul Rubens on several occasions, including on the never-finished Life of Henry IV cycle (1628–30) and the Torre de la Parada series (c. 1637–1640). Both during his Antwerp and his Brussels periods, He mingled with the elite of his time. He climbed the social ladder and aspired to live a lifestyle similar to that of the aristocrats of his day. He was thus an example of the 17th century ‚aristocratization‘ of successful citizens.
His pupils included Guilliam van Schoor and Adam Frans van der Meulen. The latter became a leading battle painter and court painter to Louis XIV of France.
There is no record of when Snayers died but it is believed he died in Brussels in 1667.

Volume II: Helmets, Equipment and Weapons

In the 368 pages of this second of the projected three volumes of German Paratroopers – Uniforms and Equipment 1936-1945 the author, Karl Veltzé, not only takes a very detailed look at the Fallschirmjäger helmets – more than a third of this volume is dedicated to them – , but also deals with the paratroopers’ special equipment (gasmask bags, hand grenade bags, ammunition bandoleers, medic equipment). The standard field equipment is covered next, followed by a chapter devoted to the individual and crew-served weapons utilized by the German airborne forces; among these are both versions of the special FG 42 paratrooper rifle. The parachutes used by the German paras are examined on 40 pages, whilst the last chapter looks at their drop containers.

This volume follows the development of the many pieces of equipment used by the German paratroopers from the early days to the last days of the Third Reich, describing in great detail the characteristics of the various models.

Six years of research and collaboration with some of the most important Fallschirmjäger collections have gone into these volumes so far. Collectors and military enthusiasts will be able to study some of the rarest original pieces and find a lot of interesting and new information in these pages. The full-colour photographs of the various items are accompanied by hundreds of period photos, more than 150 of them not published before, showing helmets, equipment and weapons in wear.

Volume III: Campaigns and Combat Operations, Decorations, Ephemera

This book concludes the three-volume series covering World War II-era German paratroopers and their uniforms and equipment. This time, the contents cover those topics not included in the previous volumes.
Initially, the operational history of the German airborne forces between 1936 and 1945 is summarized. This section includes detailed views of more than 45 accurately uniformed mannequins, over half of which were specifically assembled for this project. They illustrate the appearance of German paratroopers from their beginnings in Regiment “General Göring” through the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht in May 1945.
Aside from the exhaustively covered paratroopers of the Luftwaffe, the approximately 2,000 army and Waffen-SS paratroopers receive their own chapter in this book. Along with rare uniform items, documents and many hitherto unpublished photos are shown here.
A further chapter devotes nearly 100 pages to specific qualification and formation insignia of the airborne forces– parachutist badges, cuff bands and specific unit insignia – as well as typical decorations and awards along with their award documents.
This volume also presents service record books (Wehrpässe) and pay books (Soldbücher), as well as other personal papers used by the Wehrmacht that were also utilized by personnel of the airborne forces. The chapter also includes a section that covers paratroopers’ ID discs in detail.
The next chapter contains biographical sketches of 20 paratrooper privates, non-commissioned officers and officers, and shows pertinent items from their estates. These individuals are representative of the approximately 250,000 men who served in airborne units between 1936 and 1945.
A final chapter includes assorted memorabilia that did not fit thematically into other sections, yet is closely related to the German airborne forces.
This volume includes more than 350 period photographs, of which more than 200 have not been previously published.
